Practical island guide

Supermarkets & groceries in Rarotonga

Where to shop for groceries and how to make self-catering easier during a Rarotonga holiday.

You won't struggle to buy groceries

Rarotonga has supermarkets, convenience stores and smaller shops around the island. The practical decision is usually whether you want to do a larger shop in Avarua or Vaimaanga, or simply use smaller shops near your accommodation.

Wigmore's Superstore

Wigmore's is a major south-side supermarket in Vaimaanga and is a useful stop for travellers staying around Titikaveka, Aroa and the southern coast. Current map information lists it as open 24 hours, but confirm the latest hours before making a special trip.

Avarua shopping

Avarua has the island's highest concentration of shopping, banking and practical services. It is a sensible place for a larger supply run, especially if you are already visiting Punanga Nui Market or town.

Self-catering tip

If your accommodation has a kitchen, buy breakfast basics, drinks and easy lunches early in the trip rather than assuming a café will always be open when you want it. Sunday and public-holiday trading can be more limited at some businesses.

Use the map

Use the island map's Essentials filter as a broad area guide, then confirm the exact location and current hours before setting out.
