Lagoon guide

Best snorkelling in Rarotonga

Four useful snorkelling areas, what makes them different and the conditions to think about before getting in.

Four strong starting points

Cook Islands Tourism's current snorkelling guide highlights four Rarotonga locations: Aroa Lagoon Marine Reserve, Muri Lagoon, Fruits of Rarotonga in Tikioki, and Black Rock. They offer different conditions, so there is no reason to treat one beach as universally 'best'.

Aroa Lagoon Marine Reserve

Aroa is on the south-west side of the island beside The Rarotongan. It is one of the island's established marine-sanctuary snorkelling areas and works well as a beach-and-snorkel day even if you are staying elsewhere.

Fruits of Rarotonga / Tikioki

The current Tourism guide describes this as one of Rarotonga's marine parks, with coral bommies and a wide variety of fish. It also warns that a mild current can occur inside the lagoon, especially in south-easterly winds, and recommends fins.

Muri and Black Rock

Muri gives you lagoon access plus kayak/SUP and cruise options. Black Rock on the west side is highlighted by Tourism as often calmer in prevailing south-easterly winds, and is also a strong sunset stop.

Safety first

Lagoon conditions change with tide, weather and wind. Do not assume yesterday's easy snorkel will be identical today. Ask your accommodation or a local operator about current conditions, stay inside your ability and avoid standing on coral.
