Costs people miss

Allow for the small things.

The gaps are often transfers, market cash, card charges and one or two unplanned island experiences.

Cash and cards

New Zealand dollars are the official currency. Cards are widely available on Rarotonga, but market stalls are often cash only and international ATM or card fees can apply.

Transport

Separate airport transfers, daily transport and any one-day vehicle hire. The public bus currently charges NZ$5 for an adult single, NZ$10 for a full island loop and NZ$20 for an adult day pass.

Food rhythm

A kitchen can reduce breakfast and snack costs, while island nights and special dinners need their own allowance. Use current menus rather than a generic daily average.

Activities

List the experiences you genuinely want, then add them as one total. Lagoon cruises, cultural evenings, diving and Aitutaki can change the budget quickly.

A practical method

Build the budget in four passes.

  1. Lock in the major quotes: international flights, accommodation, insurance and any Aitutaki flights.
  2. Choose the trip rhythm: decide how often you will self-cater, eat out, use the bus or hire a vehicle.
  3. Price the anchor experiences: add only the activities you are likely to book, using the operator's current rate.
  4. Add a buffer: allow for fees, weather changes, extra transport and the experience you discover after arriving.

Common questions

Rarotonga budget FAQs

How much spending money should I take?

There is no reliable single daily figure for every visitor. Add your planned food, transport and activity costs, include cash for markets and small vendors, then add a contingency. The calculator separates this spending-money target from flights and accommodation.

What currency is used?

The official currency is the New Zealand dollar. Cook Islands notes and coins also circulate locally, but they are not legal tender outside the Cook Islands.

Will cards work everywhere?

No. EFTPOS and cards are available at many Rarotonga businesses, but cash is still useful and many market stalls are cash only. Check overseas transaction and ATM fees with your own bank.

Should Aitutaki be a separate cost?

Yes. A day tour or multi-night stay can include domestic flights, transfers, cruises, meals and extra accommodation. Use a current complete quote rather than adding only the flight.
