Rarotonga SIM, eSIM & roaming guide

What to arrange before you fly, what Vodafone Cook Islands offers when you land, and how to avoid unexpected roaming charges.

Quick answer

For most visitors, a local Vodafone Travel SIM or eSIM is the simplest option.

Vodafone Cook Islands offers a Travel eSIM online before arrival and physical Travel SIMs through Vodafone outlets, including the airport outlet. If you prefer to keep your home SIM, check your own provider's Cook Islands roaming rates before departure.

10 GB data, 30 international calling minutes and 300 international SMS messages.

28 days

20 GB data, 60 international calling minutes and 600 international SMS messages.

Vodafone says the Travel SIMs expire after their stated period, and topping up does not extend the expiry date. Travel SIMs are separate from ordinary prepaid promotions.

Travel eSIM

Use Vodafone Cook Islands' online Travel eSIM option if your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. It lets you arrange data before landing and avoid a physical SIM change.

Physical Travel SIM

Vodafone says Travel SIMs are available from its airport outlet just outside the arrivals terminal, near Avis. The Airport Authority also lists a Vodafone store in the Arrivals Meet and Greet area.

Should you use roaming?

Possibly, but do not assume your New Zealand or Australian plan includes the Cook Islands at domestic rates. Vodafone Cook Islands advises visitors to check roaming prices with their home mobile provider. Before take-off, check that your phone is unlocked, confirm the daily or travel-pass price, and turn off data roaming until you know what you will be charged.

Practical tip: Keep your normal SIM active for bank texts if needed, but set the Cook Islands SIM/eSIM as the mobile-data line. Disable automatic data switching on your phone.

Wi-Fi alternatives

Rarotonga International Airport provides limited free Wi-Fi in the arrivals and departure halls. The Airport Authority also lists Vodafone Hotspot access and an Air Raro Guest Network voucher priced at NZ$10 for 2 GB. Resorts, cafés and other Vodafone hotspots may also be available around the island.
