Why race week is worth planning around

The event brings runners and walkers from around the world to a course that follows Rarotonga’s coast. The programme includes the 31 km Round Island Road Race and supporting events such as fun runs, a teams relay and the demanding Nutters Cross Island Run. It creates a lively week for participants and supporters, but also means accommodation, transport and popular restaurants can be busier than usual.

Where to stay

Muri is convenient for restaurants, lagoon activities and a broad range of accommodation. Avarua can suit visitors who want easier access to shops and services. Aroa and Arorangi offer a quieter west-coast base, while Titikaveka suits travellers who prioritise the lagoon and a more relaxed setting. Book early for race week and confirm how you will reach registration and event locations.

Getting around during the event

Rarotonga’s main road circles the island, so a large road event can affect travel even if you are not racing. Allow extra time, follow local traffic directions and do not assume your normal driving route will be clear. If you are hiring a vehicle, ask the operator about race-day access and parking. The public bus remains useful, but operating times or journey duration may change around event activity.

A simple race-week checklist

  • Confirm your registration, event programme and start location directly with the organiser.
  • Arrange airport transfers and race-day transport before arrival.
  • Pack sun protection, a refillable bottle and a light rain layer.
  • Book any must-do restaurant, lagoon cruise or Aitutaki day trip around your event schedule.
  • Check current weather and local safety advice close to the day.

Not racing?

Race week can still be a memorable time to visit. Supporters can enjoy the atmosphere while building a holiday around the lagoon, markets, island nights and a relaxed recovery day. If you prefer quieter travel, plan activities away from the busiest event periods and confirm road access before setting out.
