Island Journal · Where to stay

The best Rarotonga area for your first trip

For most first-time visitors, Muri is the easiest answer — but it is not automatically the best answer.

Updated 29 August 2026. This is an independent area comparison, not a sponsored accommodation ranking.

Choose Muri if convenience matters most

You get the lagoon, a concentrated cluster of restaurants and activities, the Night Market on its current operating nights, and one of the easiest places on the island to stay without a car.

Choose Titikaveka if you want a quieter lagoon holiday

It suits travellers who put snorkelling and slower villa-style days ahead of walking to a large selection of restaurants every night.

Choose Aroa if snorkelling is the anchor

Aroa Lagoonarium Marine Sanctuary gives the area a clear identity. The west/southwest side also works well if sunsets matter.

Choose Arorangi if you picture sunset every night

The west coast has a broader resort feel, easy airport/town access and a strong sunset-dining rhythm.

Choose Avarua if practical town access matters more than resort-lagoon life

Markets, shopping, banking and local services are the advantage. Most beach-first visitors will still choose another area as their holiday base.
